PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Highland Park Preschool is a not-for-profit, parent-supported preschool. All parents are required to fill one volunteer role per enrolled child. Most volunteer positions are based on an average of 2.5 - 3 hours of volunteer work per month. There are four volunteer options:

In-Class Volunteers (majority of parents)
Attend class with your child approximately once/month. Assist teachers throughout class, and for 30 minutes after class to help with cleaning and sanitizing. Required to be cleared by a criminal records check within 3 months of start of preschool (we provide instructions to assist you in applying). Grandparents or caregivers are welcome to be your family’s in-class volunteer.

Parent Committee
The Parent Committee meets as needed (approximately four - six times per school year) to provide input and to assist in the operation of the preschool. Meetings take place in the evening, either in person or virtually. These positions are a great option for people that are unavailable to volunteer during the day but still wish to play an integral role at the school. Committee roles include a Co-Chair, Secretary, Special Event Coordinators (two), Volunteer Coordinator (one per class) and Communications Coordinator.

Casino Support
Our Community Association is granted a Casino through the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Association every 18-24 months. It is a major fundraising opportunity to support the Community Association and thereby the preschool. We expect our next Casino to happen between July - September 2024. There will be a variety of daytime and evening shifts. Any family that fills one Casino volunteer shift will fulfill their volunteer commitment for the full school year.

Operations Support
A limited number of additional roles may be added at the discretion of the Teachers and Parent Committee. Examples include: Shovelling Snow before class, Administrative Support, and Craft Preparation/Shopping. These will be reserved for families that have extenuating circumstances and cannot commit to in-class volunteering or Parent Committee.

Families who do not fulfill their volunteer requirement will be required to pay $150 on December 1 (September - December) and/or $250 on June 1 (January - June) if your volunteer commitment has not been completed for that semester.
